Pimples and zits can sometimes leave pockmarks and unsightly scars on your face or shoulders, which are ugly and harmful for your self-respect. The best way to avoid this situation would be to prevent scars forming in the first place, by not scratching or bursting the eruptions. Better still, lead an altogether acne free life by eliminating the causes of acne. However, once you have scars it may take some time to remove them. How do you go about it? First, ensure that your acne is cured, or at least not progressing further, before you start healing acne scars. It's no use trying to remove a few scars while others are appearing at a faster rate. Another tip to keep in mind is that you should use a good sunscreen solution whenever you go out, because sunlight worsens the condition. The first type of treatment for acne scars involves covering them up. The worst thing about acne scars is their appearance, so taking care of that will be winning half the battle. Use a skin make-up foundation that is advertised to be non-irritant and acne-friendly. Next, use acne treatment lotions and creams meant for local application, which heal the fine scars by encouraging the production of collagen, the basic building block of the skin. Look for acne medicine that contains a chemical called 'tretinoin', which does exactly this and also gently removes the built-up layers of dead skin which are one of the main causes of acne. Certain types of severe acne scars must be treated with injectable materials, which fill up the depressions and raise the affected skin to the surrounding level. Along with these, it may be helpful to use several successive face packs containing AHA (Alpha Hydroxy-Acid) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy-Acid), which improve the overall health and glow of your skin. There are also several surgical methods for treating the deepest and most obstinate acne scars. For example, dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are used to remove dead skin layers in a highly targeted and efficient manner. Some types of laser acne treatment, known as 'photo-rejuvenation' and 'resurfacing', cause the scarred skin sections to be burned away, and allow new collagen to form in their place. There is also a method for removing acne scars surgically, and then filling up the place with the previously mentioned injectable fillers. This is popularly known as scar revision treatment.
